What to Wear

I am often asked, "What should we wear for our session?" I am here to tell you not to worry, I've got you covered with the right recommendations you'll need to pull together the perfect look for your session. I have put together a few tips when it comes to deciding what to wear.

Let's talk about patterns. While patterns are lively and add great texture and personality, there is such a thing as TOO MUCH. A general rule of thumb I like to follow is if you have one BIG pattern, throw in another that is smaller, and vary the patterns. If you have a bold floral, compliment it with a delicate plaid or stripe, or vice versa. If you match too many family members in the same pattern everything will blend together, and then the subjects stand out a lot less. If both patterns are LARGE it is distracting to the eye. Patterns not for you? No worries, I will be covering solids here shortly.

You can totally rock all solids for your session! Just be sure to add some layers for texture and depth (i.e., a cardigan, a vest, a scarf, a hat, hair piece, denim jacket, etc.... I could go on and on). If it is too warm for layers, try finding pieces that have lace detail or some sort of additional pop of pattern that keeps it from being a flat piece. Keep all colors in the same family: pastel, jewel tone, neutral, etc.

Additionally and in conclusion to a prior stated tip, I would like to elaborate on the THREE PIECE RULE. A great way to pull an outfit together, especially solids, is to compliment with a statement piece, such as one of the above examples or even jewelry. This adds character to any wardrobe!

Dress vs. Pants? I will always choose a dress for a mom... but this is also MY personal preference, and ultimately I want my clients to feel comfortable and most importantly, like themselves, when I am photographing them. I adore dresses because of the flow and movement, and there is a dress that is flattering for every woman! If you aren't a fan of dresses there are plenty of options with pants, too! You will never go wrong with a sweater and nice fitting jeans. Tunics are also great options for fall and winter! As far as summertime goes, I sure do love a romper, which are also precious!

The Men:

Men are easy. Jeans, khakis with a simple tee, sweater, dress shirt, etc. Plus really, isn't that what they are most comfortable in anyway? Ladies: plan YOUR outfit first, base your kids off of that and then finally, tie it up with dad. No kids? Then skip that step!

Things to avoid...

-I do not recommend bright colors. They do not photograph well and tend to cast color onto skin.

-I do not recommend large bows. They can be distracting and can make those sweet snuggly and up close shots a little less appealing. If you do love a sweet bow, stick to smaller more petite bows for your session. If you have to have a big bow though, this is ultimately your session and do as ya please!

-While graphic tees are GREAT, try to stay away from characters (Mickey Mouse, movie characters, Disney, etc.)

-Don't forget the importance of shoes! Nothing will ruin an outfit faster than a full body shot of your family and someone is wearing tennis shoes with a nice sweater. And while I love Crocs, that goes for them, too!

Also, be sure socks match the outfit (if they will show). I can't edit out bright orange socks when the rest of your clothing is neutral toned.

Not all about traditional? Get funky with it!

Let your personality show through! Retro/Urban looks go great when shooting in locations with brick and unique or modern architecture, etc.
